What is Code in the Community?

Code in the Community is an initiative to bring free coding classes to young Singaporeans from disadvantaged backgrounds. This initiative is managed by Saturday Kids—Singapore’s first and largest coding school for kids—a social enterprise on a mission to inspire kids to create a better future with technology.

Who is eligible to join CITC?

Code in the Community is open to the following students aged 5 to 14 years old who are

  • currently a low family-income beneficiary at CDAC/EA/SINDA/Yayasan Mendaki,

  • or under MOE Financial Aid Scheme (FAS),

  • or holds a Blue or Orange CHAS card,

  • or a beneficiary of the MOE Edusave Merit Bursary in 2021/2022,

  • or a beneficiary of any other government scheme for low-income families (including but not limited to ComCare, NeuPC etc.)

If you believe your family falls into the category of low income, but does not belong to any of the above schemes, please contact your respective Self-Help Group to determine your eligibility.

What is the schedule for CITC?

Each course in the Code in the Community programme is 16 hours. It will be conducted over 8 lessons of 2 hours each. The lessons take place once a week, on either Saturday or Sunday depending on your chosen venue.

Where is CITC held?

Code in the Community takes place at various libraries and other public buildings around Singapore. You are welcome to pick the Code in the Community venue most convenient for you, subject to space availability.

What do I need to pay? Is there any obligation for taking part in CITC?

Code in The Community is a free program. While there is no cost to participating in the program, children are required to commit to attending the classes to receive the full benefit of the program. Only students at least 75% attendance will receive a Certificate of Graduation, may be invited for free year-long programs, holiday camps or workshops.

What will kids learn?

Depending on their age group, kids will either learn basic programming via a block-based platform, or a more advanced text-based coding language.

Beyond just learning to code, the curriculum designed by Saturday Kids also emphasises the development of kids’ creative confidence, computational thinking, and self-directed learning.

You can read about how parents of Code in the Community graduates have described the impact of the programme on their kids on our blog.

What does my child need to bring?

All equipment (laptops etc) will be provided. We recommend that your child brings a water bottle, a jacket and a notebook to take notes if they wish.

Is there any certificate for taking part?

Students who achieve a minimum of 75% attendance (attend 6 out of 8 sessions) will receive a certificate of graduation through email at the end of the program.

My child took part in CITC before. Is this a follow-on course? Can they join again?

Your child can now register for our new classes if they have graduated from the Level 1 foundations and Level 2 applications class.
