What do volunteers do?

Volunteers can take part in this program as either lead instructors or assistants in in-person classrooms or as lead instructors in the classes that are conducted online. They are responsible for delivering the curriculum, classroom management, and making sure each child has an encouraging, impactful learning experience.

Who is eligible to volunteer?

Responsible individuals with a love for teaching kids and interest in tech. Successful volunteers will need to have some familiarity with either Scratch or Python depending on your teaching preference.

Volunteers have to be at least 16 years old and will undergo a careful screening process by Saturday Kids before completing a training programme in classroom management and curriculum. This will take approximately 7-8 hours of in-person time and up to 3 hours of independent learning done remotely.

What is the time commitment like?

The expected time commitment is ~26hrs. This includes the time invested in our training programme in classroom management and curriculum, as well as 16 teaching hours spread out in 8 weekly sessions of two hours long each class. We strongly encourage volunteers to apply if they are able to fulfil this time commitment.

How long does it take for my volunteer application to be approved?

New volunteers: 1 to 3 weeks

Returning volunteers: 1 week

Can I choose my preferred locations and timings to volunteer at?

Yes, please indicate your preferred locations and timings on the registration form. While we will try our best to ensure your preferences are catered to, do note that we cannot guarantee that you will receive your first choice of location/timing. For our classes conducted online, you can also indicate your preferred timings.

What are the benefits of volunteering with CITC?

Lead Instructors will be remunerated at a rate of $20 per hour of classroom teaching time. Unfortunately, assistants are not eligible to receive a stipend. Volunteers who are full-time students may note that hours spent volunteering with CITC are eligible for CIP hours, and we’re happy to provide letters of reference to all volunteers who’ve demonstrated themselves during the programme.

Please note that we’re only allowed to remunerate volunteers who are Singaporeans/PRs as per Ministry of Manpower. By law, we are prohibited from paying volunteers who are on S Pass/E Pass/Dependency Pass. Lead volunteers who fall into this category can elect to either donate the equivalent amount to a charity of their choice or to our Pay it Forward Fund; donations to the latter will be matched by Saturday Kids to sponsor seats for CITC alumni in our holiday or term-time creative coding classes.

I would like to volunteer with friends or colleagues. Could we volunteer as a group?

Yes, definitely! You can register individually using our registration form. For volunteer groups larger than 10 people, please email us to facilitate the process.
